Anthems

There are favorite songs. Everyone has them. Then there are anthems.

You know. The song that is just about your exact situation in this amazing way even though you didn't write it.

When I went away to college it was the Dixie Chicks (this was pre entrance into the political sphere). I'd been living it up working a part time job and enjoying my freedom the summer after high school and - BAM - there was Wide Open Spaces.

You know.

She needs wide open spaces,
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces —
She knows the high stakes

It was THE song. Blaring through the walls of the freshman floor in my all girls dorm. We danced around the hall and played it over and over until our RA came and said "girls" you know with that look like she was thinking it was the greatest thing ever, but was gonna get in trouble herself if she didn't get us to turn the volume down. I mean she was hanging out with us...

Fantastic times.

More recently someone at work used to sing You Can't Always Get What You Want when we were talking about scaling back the budget.

I'd honestly not heard it before, but the lyrics became an anthem of sorts.

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need

Ugh. Not in a good way. The part of the song about the girl - much more interesting to me.

Alas - my daughter.

Big Girl as she is can't get enough of these two songs right now.

Born This Way (Kidz Bop Version - I can't bear the thought of a six year-old seeing the real video.)

The part she sings over and over:

There's nothing wrong with lovin' who you are, she said,
Cause he made you perfect, Babe
So hold your head up girl and you'll go far,
Listen to me when I say.

I'm beautiful in my way 'cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track baby

That's it. The part she sings is cute. I love that she says God particularly loud. I think she is getting out of it that she is an individual, etc. But in a much different way than Lady Gaga meant.

Oh well.

The other fav? Taylor Swift.

Now I have to say she is - and hopefully stays - a pretty good role model.

When I hear the kids talking about her they say how she goes to school and she is pretty and has nice friends. Sweet.

The song that I love hearing my daughter sing of hers?

So don't you worry your pretty little mind
People throw rocks at things that shine

Aww. Aren't those sweet.

What is your anthem these days? The People on the Bus... Sometimes I start thinking that should be the anthem for our family vehicle. - Lame. Share yours!
